Zcash Coordinates Protocol Upgrade After Orchard Pool Issue

A coordinated Zcash protocol update is underway after an issue affecting the Orchard shielded pool was identified during routine auditing and security review over the weekend.

The issue has stopped Orchard-related transactions from being mined, forcing a temporary suspension of Orchard pool activity while the upgrade rollout moves across the network. Zcash Open Development Lab said privacy is unaffected, all funds are safe and the issue was identified before any known exploitation.

The protocol-level change took effect at 22:30 EDT on June 1, 2026. Orchard transactions are expected to be re-enabled at 14:00 EDT on June 2, 2026, with a status update scheduled for 10:00 EDT.

The suspension is limited to Orchard, Zcash’s latest shielded pool. Wallet users will be unable to send or receive Orchard funds until the upgrade is complete. Zcash transactions involving the Sapling shielded pool and transparent pool remain unaffected, while ZEC held on exchanges can continue trading normally.

Zcash Keeps Running Outside Orchard

The incident is not a full Zcash network halt. Blocks continue, and the affected activity is limited to the newest shielded pool. That makes the operational impact narrower than a chain-wide outage, but still important because Orchard sits at the center of Zcash’s current privacy stack.

Orchard was introduced as Zcash’s newer shielded protocol, designed around improved shielded payments and future scalability. For many users and wallet developers, it represents the preferred direction for private ZEC activity because it builds on newer zero-knowledge infrastructure and supports modern shielded-address workflows.

That is why the coordinated upgrade matters. A temporary pause in Orchard activity affects the users most closely aligned with Zcash’s privacy roadmap, even if Sapling, transparent transactions and exchange balances continue operating. The network is still live, but its newest privacy pool is under controlled suspension until the protocol update is fully rolled out.

The update also arrives during a period of renewed attention on Zcash. Recent Zcash roadmap coverage has focused on rising shielded supply, post-quantum planning and the role of Orchard in the project’s longer-term privacy architecture.

Responsible Disclosure Extends Beyond Zcash

The upgrade is being coordinated through voluntary cooperation across developers, infrastructure operators and other independent Zcash ecosystem participants. That coordination model matters because Zcash does not operate as a single company-run network. Protocol-level changes require enough independent infrastructure to move in the same direction.

The responsible-disclosure process is also extending beyond Zcash. Other protocols that have deployed Orchard are being notified, reducing the risk that a pool-specific issue remains isolated in public discussion while related implementations face similar exposure.

For users, the immediate takeaway is operational rather than financial. Orchard sends and receives are temporarily unavailable. Sapling and transparent Zcash transactions continue. Exchange-held ZEC remains tradable. Funds are not described as lost or exposed, and the issue was identified through audit work before any known exploit.

The next key timestamp is 14:00 EDT on June 2, when Orchard activity is expected to resume if the upgrade rollout completes as planned. Until then, Zcash’s latest shielded pool remains paused by design while the network pushes through a security-focused protocol update.
