Neutrl Pauses NUSD Minting And Redemptions As Reserve Review Begins

Neutrl has temporarily suspended NUSD minting, redemptions and other protocol functions after identifying circumstances affecting its reserves.

The protocol-wide pause was implemented with legal counsel involved to preserve an orderly process while Neutrl assesses the impact on its reserve portfolio. The team has not identified a smart-contract exploit or unauthorized mint and has not announced losses tied to an onchain attack.

NUSD continued trading close to its intended dollar value after the halt, limiting the immediate price disruption even as redemption access disappeared.

Reserve Structure Comes Under Scrutiny

NUSD is a synthetic dollar backed through a mixture of liquid stablecoins, hedged OTC positions and market-neutral strategies rather than cash held directly in a bank account.

Neutrl’s reserve framework allocates part of the portfolio to liquid assets such as USDC, USDT and USDe for redemptions, while other capital can be deployed into discounted OTC positions and basis or funding-rate strategies. The structure is designed to match longer-duration assets against expected liabilities while maintaining a liquid buffer for withdrawals.

In June, Neutrl disclosed $134.88 million of backing against $132.22 million of NUSD supply, equivalent to a 102.01% backing ratio at the time. The latest interruption now shifts attention to the current composition and availability of those reserves rather than the historical collateral ratio.

NUSD Holds Peg While Secondary Liquidity Tightens

NUSD was trading around $0.999 at publication, with its main Curve NUSD/USDC market holding roughly $3.5 million of liquidity. The pool contained approximately 1.95 million NUSD and 1.59 million USDC, while 24-hour trading volume exceeded $570,000.

The yield-bearing sNUSD market is considerably thinner. sNUSD was back near $1.05 in current Uniswap markets, but individual pools carried only several thousand dollars of liquidity, leaving secondary pricing vulnerable to large slippage during concentrated selling.

The current readings do not support treating an earlier sharp sNUSD dislocation as a continuing 60% depeg. NUSD itself has also remained substantially closer to par than USX during its liquidity-driven collapse to $0.10.

Redemptions Become The Immediate Constraint

The suspension removes the primary mechanism through which eligible NUSD holders can return tokens to the protocol in exchange for backing assets. Secondary-market liquidity therefore becomes the available exit route while the reserve assessment continues.

Synthetic-dollar stress has produced different outcomes elsewhere. Synthetix ultimately retired sUSD after its prolonged depeg, replacing attempts to restore the peg with a governance-approved settlement path.

Neutrl has processed more than $500 million of NUSD redemptions since launch, making the current halt a material change from normal protocol operations.

Minting, redemptions and the affected protocol functions remained paused at publication while the reserve assessment continued.
