HTX-Linked Wallets Send Tiny USDT Transfers As Sanctions Screening Tightens

Small USDT transfers from wallets linked to HTX are appearing across user addresses, raising concerns that unsolicited transactions could trigger sanctions screening at exchanges and DeFi platforms.

Multiple users have reported receiving USDT from addresses tagged as HTX, with transfers generally worth only a few dollars and some reaching about 12 USDT. An HTX ambassador denied that the exchange intentionally distributed the funds, leaving the source and purpose of the transfers unconfirmed.

The transfers arrive less than three months after the UK sanctioned Huobi Global S.A. and associated HTX names over alleged financial activity connected to Russia’s financial sector. Britain’s May 26 designation specifically lists Huobi Global among entities accused of making funds or economic resources available to parties in the Russian financial system.

Small Transfers Create New Screening Risk

The concern centers on blockchain compliance systems that trace exposure between addresses rather than simply checking account names. An unsolicited transfer from a tagged wallet can create an onchain connection even when the recipient never requested or controlled the transaction.

That problem had already surfaced after the UK action, when exchanges tightened screening of HTX-linked deposits and withdrawals. Users subsequently reported transfer restrictions and account freezes tied to HTX exposure, with some platforms requesting source-of-funds documentation before restoring access.

The latest transfers have consequently been described by some users as “compliance poisoning,” although there is no evidence that HTX itself directed a campaign intended to contaminate recipient wallets. Passive receipt of a tiny payment also does not automatically establish that the recipient knowingly transacted with a sanctioned entity.

HTX Wallet Activity Has Already Drawn Scrutiny

HTX’s onchain structure has been under examination since the May sanctions. Blockchain analysts tracked the exchange shifting activity into hundreds of newly identified central wallets, with Global Ledger finding more than 750 HTX-linked accounts on Tron compared with 32 before the UK designation.

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists documented the rapid wallet expansion in July, with analysts arguing that frequent address changes make exchange flows harder for investigators and compliance systems to track.

HTX has rejected broader interpretations of the UK action, arguing that the sanctioned Huobi Global entity is separate from its operating exchange. Justin Sun and HTX challenged the designation shortly after it was imposed.

Binance Cutoff Arrives August 23

Pressure will increase on August 23 when European Union transaction restrictions involving HTX take effect. The EU added HTX to a group of crypto providers targeted under its latest Russia sanctions package, alleging that the listed platforms significantly frustrate sanctions enforcement.

Binance will also restrict transactions involving HTX and ten other platforms from August 23. Transactions may face compliance review and associated wallets can be temporarily restricted.

Sun says Binance clarified that the restriction concerns only its UK and EU users. Binance’s public notice does not state that geographic limitation. UK court records separately confirm settlement discussions between HTX and the FCA over an earlier financial-promotions case, while Sun’s claim that talks are also underway with EU regulators has not been independently confirmed.
